Adopting in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) has an online web site where potential adoptive families can get information about adoption and request an adoption information packet.

Most of the children who are available for adoption through OKDHS are older and have special needs that range from problems in school, behavioral issues, medical conditions or being part of a sibling group that wishes to be placed for adoption together.

Adoptions that are done through OKDHS can take a few months to several months to complete. There are no fees for their services and they may also award the child, Adoption Assistance to help with the legal fees that are required to finalize the adoption.

The potential adoptive family will need to have a home study completed. They will also need to get a medical done by their doctor, stating that they are in good enough health to care for a child. A copy of the marriage license and/or divorce decree will be needed for the home study, in addition to photos of the family and references. Singles, as well as married couples are allowed to adopt. The family does not need to own their home; they just need to have a safe home with bedroom space for the adopted child. The family will need to have enough financial income to support their own family and the child they adopt.

OKDHS does have situations where infants become available for adoption. Infant adoption through OKDHS is rare and those who want to adopt an infant may have a very long wait.

Families, who want to adopt infants, can find a child-placing agency that works with birth mothers who choose adoption for their child. Some agencies facilitate Domestic Adoptions in the United States and/or International Adoptions in other countries. It's important to remember that there are children all over the world who need homes. Your child may be found in a different state or even a different country.
